We have been telling the negative story about AI and education a lot.

Pick up any newspaper, open any parent forum, and you will find the same anxiety playing out in a loop:

> AI gives students instant answers, students stop thinking, students become intellectually dependent and academically dishonest.

The villain is clear. The verdict is in. AI is making the next generation dumber.

I have heard that story so many times that I almost started believing it myself.

Then I came across a piece by the team at [Every](https://every.to/podcast/inside-an-ai-high-school-through-the-eyes-of-a-17-year-old-founder), where Dan Shipper sat down with Alex Mathew, a 17-year-old high school senior in Austin, Texas. What followed was one of the most optimistic conversations about the future of education I have encountered in a long time.

I felt a genuine urge to amplify it, because it deserves a wider audience than it may otherwise reach.

## **A School That Turned The Classroom Inside Out**

Mathew attends [Alpha High School](https://alphahigh.school/), part of a rapidly expanding network of kindergarten-through-grade-12 private schools that have made a radical decision: **no traditional teachers.**

Academic content is delivered entirely through an AI-powered learning platform called **_Timeback_**. The adults in the room, known as “guides,” do not teach curriculum. Their job is to support students emotionally and keep them motivated.

The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. with what Mathew describes as “Tony Robbins for kids.” Before any academic work starts, students spend 15 minutes shifting from “home mode” to “school mode.”

They might debate an LLM, solve a puzzle, or discuss something interesting they found on X. Students are grouped into “houses,” Hogwarts-style, based on personality and the progress they have made on their individual projects.

Then comes the academic block: two to three hours of focused learning, structured into 27-minute intervals with five-minute breaks. Timeback delivers a personalised stream of videos, articles, and quizzes, some built by Alpha, others sourced from third-party providers. AI runs quietly in the background, customising what each student sees and tracking where their understanding has gaps.

And crucially, there is **no AI chatbot tutoring anyone**. Alpha tested that approach but it did not work.

When students had open access to a chatbot, they used it to cut corners. When the chatbot was restricted, it became useless. So the school moved on.

The AI serves the _learning architecture_. It does not replace the student’s thinking.

## **Motivation is The Real Curriculum**

Here is the insight from Mathew that has stuck with me: “It is 90 percent motivation, 10 percent education technology.”

That ratio matters. The school does not rely on AI to do the heavy lifting. It relies on genuinely motivated students. The AI is the infrastructure. The drive to learn still has to come from somewhere human.

Alpha builds that motivation in several ways. For subjects a student loves, the content itself is the reward.

Mathew breezes through AP Psychology because it connects directly to his startup, a company called [Berry](https://berryplush.com/) that he is building around an AI-stuffed animal designed to help teenagers manage their mental health.

For subjects students dislike, the school gets inventive, offering students money toward their projects or invitations to social outings, called “FOMOs,” when they hit their targets.

The school also gives students something most educational institutions never offer: **genuine agency.** Mathew negotiated with his guides to complete his first semester early so he could fly to San Francisco and work on Berry full-time, then return to finish his second semester without losing credits.

That is not a loophole. That is the design.

## **The Barrier that Motivation Alone Cannot Solve**

Reading about Alpha High School, I kept thinking about a different kind of barrier: **not the absence of motivation, but the absence of access.**

I recall coming across [Nippon.com](http://Nippon.com)’s article last year about the growing need for specialised Japanese language instruction in Japan. As of the fiscal year 2023, nearly 70,000 students in elementary, junior high, and high schools required this support, a number that has more than doubled over the past decade.

Interestingly, in 70 percent of the schools where these students are enrolled, there are only four or fewer students needing such instruction. This small ratio makes it challenging for local governments to justify dedicating specialised staff to address the issue effectively.

In fiscal 2023, 970 school-age foreign children were confirmed not to be attending school at all. That represents a 24.6 percent increase over the previous year.

Taking into account children whose attendance status was unclear, the number of young people potentially excluded from education entirely may reach 8,601.

These are not students lacking motivation. They are students locked out of a learning environment because it operates in a language they cannot yet follow.

## **Invisible Wall for Immigrant Parents**

Yesterday, I was doing some research for my upcoming app demo for my education sector client. Until I found a statistic that stopped me cold. 

**_“During 2023-2024 school year, around_** [**_79%_**](https://www.languageline.com/blog/study-school-involvement-drops-dramatically-for-non-english-speaking-parents) **_of Spanish-speaking parents who try to participate in school activities report that language barriers make it difficult.”_**

Let that sink in. Nearly four out of five parents who _want_ to be involved in their child's education are hitting a wall before they even start.

Even with the advancement of technology, the gap is widening, not shrinking. In 1999, 69% of non-English-speaking parents attended general school meetings. By 2024, that number had dropped to just 55%. Meanwhile, English-speaking parent attendance rose to 87%.

That's a 32-percentage-point gap. And behind every point is a child whose parent couldn't advocate for them.

## **A Real Story from Philadelphia**

Right after stumbling upon that heartbreaking statistic, I came across an article from 2025. It was a story from [Zulma Guzmán](https://www.chalkbeat.org/philadelphia/2025/07/28/latino-families-struggle-with-translation-communication-in-school-system/), an immigrant from El Salvador who now calls Philadelphia home. 

Zulma’s experience perfectly echoes the statistic: the frustration felt by Spanish-speaking parents as they navigate a school system that often feels designed to exclude them.

Parents miss information about the academic interventions their children need. They don't understand the health services available through schools. They can't decode report cards or respond to urgent communications about their child's behaviour.

On the other hand, Philadelphia's Latino student population has increased by [**51%**](https://www.chalkbeat.org/philadelphia/2025/07/28/latino-families-struggle-with-translation-communication-in-school-system/) **since 2018**. That's remarkable growth. But the translation services haven't kept pace. And the children caught in the middle are paying the price.

_"We need more support,"_ Zulma says. 

Coming from someone who has witnessed this crisis up close, it's not a complaint. 

It's a plea.

## **Teachers Feel It Too**

This problem isn't just on one side of the desk.

**56% of teachers** in the US report being concerned about language barriers when communicating with ESL parents. 

They can see students struggling. They know what interventions would help. But they can't have the necessary conversations with the families who need to hear it most.

Consider what that means in practice. A teacher notices a student falling behind in reading. The standard approach would be to meet with parents, explain the situation, and develop a plan together. But if the parents speak limited English, that conversation becomes nearly impossible.

Some schools have bilingual staff. Some hire professional interpreters for important meetings. But these resources are expensive, inconsistent, and often unavailable when teachers need them most.

When language barriers make complex conversations too difficult, schools default to "no."

The result? International students miss out on excursions, sporting events, cultural experiences, and opportunities that their English-speaking peers access easily. Not because their parents don't care, but because the school can't effectively communicate with them.

Alright, here's something that slipped under the radar but is actually brilliant: 

As of June 2021, international students in Australia can enrol in [23 short courses](https://www.legislation.gov.au/F2021L00877/latest/text) without their provider needing to be CRICOS-registered.

I know, I know. CRICOS sounds like some ancient Roman curse. But stick with me, because this change is genuinely exciting for both students and training providers, and you should’nt miss it. almost nobody seems to realise it's happened.

Let me explain what this actually means and why it matters.

## What's CRICOS and Why Should You Care?

CRICOS stands for ‘Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students’. Basically, it's the official list of education providers allowed to recruit and teach international students in Australia.

Getting CRICOS registration is expensive and complicated. Providers need to meet strict quality standards, maintain detailed records, prove financial viability, and jump through various regulatory hoops. 

For big universities and colleges offering full degrees, that investment makes sense. For organisations offering short courses like first aid certificates or responsible service of alcohol training? The cost and admin burden often wasn't worth it.

So here's what used to happen: international students studying in Australia wanted to pick up practical skills whilst they were here. A barista certificate. First aid training. A white card for construction work. Basic stuff that would make them more employable.

But most providers offering these short courses weren't CRICOS-registered. And legally, they couldn't enrol international students. So students missed out on training that could genuinely improve their Australian experience and job prospects.

## The Exemption Nobody's Talking About

In June 2021, the Minister for Education made a legislative instrument exempting 23 units of competency from CRICOS requirements. The Education Services for Overseas Students (Exempt Courses) Instrument 2021 changed the game entirely.

So, what does this mean in plain English? 

Non-CRICOS registered training providers can now offer these 23 courses to international students, as long as they meet standard domestic training organisation requirements.

The exempted courses include practical, employability-focused training like first aid, infection control, construction white cards, and responsible service of alcohol. These are exactly the kinds of **short, low-cost courses** that help students work legally and safely whilst studying in Australia.

According to the [Department of Education](https://www.education.gov.au/esos-framework/changes-legislative-framework-overseas-students), these courses were chosen because they're "low-cost, short in duration and allow overseas students to gain prerequisite industry qualifications to enrich their Australian experience and improve their skills, increase their employability in a wider range of jobs and reduce their vulnerability to workplace exploitation."

In 2016, he began on a journey to discover his past.

Along with 49 other Americans, Jeff participated in an international genealogy conference organized by the Slovenian Genealogy Society.

On this trip, he directly saw and experienced the place where his ancestors had once resided. **At that moment, the things that he had seen in pictures have come to life**. Lucky for Jeff, the life-changing trip that he had undertaken was covered by a Slovenian TV station.

5 years later, **Jeff has become the President of the [Slovenian Genealogy Society International](https://www.sloveniangenealogy.org/)** based in Cleveland, Ohio. He wanted to put the 12-minute video from the Slovenian TV coverage in the archive of the genealogy group, hoping that it could help and inspire others in a similar situation. However, it was primarily spoken in Slovenian, a language that he could neither speak nor understand.

Jeff wanted the video to be translated into English. That is when he contacted VideoTranslator. Equipped with the video and Jeff’s parent’s family picture, I began to do my work.

# Transcribing The Video

Before translating the video, I used VideoTranslator’s application that can automatically transcribe videos by using the AI system that is embedded in the app.

# Translating The Video

I understand that things can easily get lost in translation. That is why a professional translator was hired. The transcription from Video Translator’s app was transferred into a txt file and sent to a translator. The translator then came back with the translated subtitles of the video.

# Creating Burnt-In Subtitles

The original video has burnt-in subtitles in Slovenian. I wanted to make sure that the new burnt-in subtitles would match the current one.

First, I synced the translated subtitles to the video by using Adobe Premiere Pro. I shifted the timing a little bit to match the dialogues.

I also added a black background behind the text with 90% transparency to make it easier for people to read and match the style of the original video.

After editing it, I saved the file with the burnt-in subtitles in the video.

After I sent the video with the burnt-in subtitles to Jeff, he asked me to fix some name spelling errors. I realized that the spelling errors were mainly from the original video, not from the translation.

So, how can I fix this problem?

I figured that I can fix this by adding a text overlay on top of the original one. I used matching font style and size and corrected the spelling errors.

In the end, it looks like it was not edited at all!

# Fixing Up Damaged Photo

Jeff had sent us a picture of his parent’s family photo. However, the image is damaged with discolouration on the right side.

I know how much it would mean for him to have the picture fixed up, so I did.

I used Adobe Photoshop to fix the image. I replaced the damaged area with pixels from the undamaged picture by using the patch tool.

This is the end result.

# What I Learnt

Jeff’s story resonated with me. As an Indonesian of Chinese ancestry, I too often find myself wondering about my own families story.

**_Where were they from?_**

**_Why did they move?_**

**_Who were the important people in their lives?_**

I was born and raised in Indonesia.

My family does not speak mandarin, and my grandparents did not teach the Chinese dialect to me. Just like Jeff, language is a big challenge in discovering my own story.

Seeing how far Jeff has come and what he wanted to pass along to his children has inspired me. Someday I would also like to see the places where my people had lived, how they spent their lives, who their partners and children were, and untangle the mysteries of my past.
