Reviewing Splice Video Editor on iPhone

Hello, fam!

A few weeks back, we have just released an article about the 9 of iOS top video editing apps.

One of the apps that we mentioned in that article is Splice.

So, today, we are going to give you our honest review of the video editing app Splice!

What Is Splice

Splice is a free video editing app from the creators of GoPro.

The app claims that it will allow users to:

  • Trim, cut, crop video clips
  • Adjust the video speed
  • Overlay videos and apply masks
  • Remove video backgrounds
  • Apply filters and effects on the videos
  • Add titles, text overlays, and outro
  • Create video slideshows

What We Will Be Judging

In this article, we will be judging how good Splice is at:

  • Trimming and cutting video clips
  • Adding video/image overlays
  • Applying filters, effects, and masks on videos
  • Adding texts
  • Adding music/audio

We picked these 5 items as they are the basic attributes of short video editing.

First Impression Of The Splice App

Just like any other application, Splice will ask you to sign up when you first open the application.

It then will ask you some questions, such as:

  • What is your video editing level
  • Where will you share your videos the most
  • What brings you to Splice

It will then ask you to try Splice Pro, which in our opinion is a good thing. It means that people will be well aware that there is a paid version of the app and that some features will be locked if you don’t subscribe to the pro version.

It is better to know up front that some features won’t be available in the free version than to have finished editing your video and finding out that you can’t save the video because you are not on the pro version.

Starting A New Project With Splice

Before you begin a new project, Splice allows you to add a project title and modify your video’s aspect ratio. This means that you can change the ratio depending on the location you want to share the video.

For example, if you want to edit TikTok videos, you can choose the 9:16 Portrait mode.

In our case, we just want to make a regular landscape video. Hence, the 16:9 landscape ratio is chosen.

Editing Video With Splice

After the add the project title and media and choosing the video ratio, we began editing the video.

Trimming and cutting video clips

Trimming The Video

It is fairly easy to trim videos on Splice. You just have to tap on your media and you can drag the edge clip and slide it to trim your videos.

Cutting The Video

Here is how you can cut your videos on Splice:

  • Tap on the media of your choice
  • Locate where you want to cut the media
  • The yellow line is the guideline on where your media will be cut
  • Tap on the media of your choice again
  • Tap split
  • Your media will be separated into 2 different clips

Adding Video/Image Overlays

Add video/image overlays:

  • Make sure that the video/image that you want to add to the overlay is in your timeline
  • Press and hold on to the media that you want to be added as an overlay
  • Drag the clip to the ‘drop here to turn into an overlay’ tab
  • Trim your clip the same way as you would trim a normal video

The great part about Splice is that you can resize the video/image that you want to add as an overlay. This means that you can add your logo to your video with the overlay tool.

Tips: you can resize video/image when adding it as an overlay

Applying Filters, Effects, and Masks On Videos

Applying Filters

To add filters on your media, you have to:

  • Tap on your media
  • Click the filter icon at the bottom of the timeline
  • Choose the filter of your choice
  • Adjust the filter level

Tips: If you click on the double tick icon at the bottom of your timeline, you can apply the filter to all of your media.

Applying Effects

To add effects on your media, you have to:

Tap the effects icon at the bottom of your timeline. Make sure that you are not currently tapping on your media or else you won’t be able to find the effects icon.

Choose which effect that you want to add

You can choose which part of your video will get the effects by sliding the effect tab on your timeline

Applying Masks

After you choose the video effects, you can choose the mask by tapping on the mask icon next to the effects icon.

Here, you can choose different masking options such as circle, line, mirror, and rectangle. By applying the mask function, only the area where you apply the mask will get the effects.

Adding Texts

To add texts, you need to tap on the title icon at the bottom of your timeline.

Splice will treat all texts as titles, so you need to make sure that you delete the blank background if you want to make the text as a subtitle.

After that, you want to double-tap the media screen and type the title/subtitles that you want

You can adjust the timing of your text by sliding it around the timeline

You can also adjust the size by pinching on the text

Minus points:

  • The text function will pop randomly across the timeline. It does not automatically show next to the last available text so you need to adjust the timing all the time.
  • You can’t see the font size so your text sizes won’t be uniform
  • There is only one font style

Adding Music/Audio

Adding Music To Splice

You can add music to your videos by clicking on the music icon at the bottom of your timeline.

You can choose to either import your own music or browse thousands of music from Splice gallery. However, the music from Splice gallery is only available if for Splice Pro users.

Bonus point - you can add sound effects such as claps, footsteps, background noises, etc.

Adding Audio To Splice

To add audio to Splice, you first have to set the time at which you want the voice recording to start. Once you have set that up, you can click on the voice icon at the bottom of the timeline and it will automatically record your audio.

If you have both audio and music, you can tap the music icon to switch the view between the audio and music.

Minus point - you cannot hold and record your audio, meaning that once the audio starts recording, you need to keep on talking.

Exporting Your Edited Video From Splice

When saving a video from Splice, it allows you to choose the resolution of your choice. You can choose from Ultra - 4k, Full HD, HD, or large.

The size of the file will depend on the resolution that you choose.

End-Result Of Using Splice Video Editor

Watch the video below to see what our video looks like after editing it from Splice.

As you can see from the video, the texts do not look nice. The sizes are all different and there is only 1 font style.

Plus Points Of Using Splice

  • Trimming and cutting videos is easy to do
  • Video/image can be resized when added as an overlay
  • Filters can be added to all media in 1 click
  • Mask function works well
  • You can add many good songs from the Splice library if you use the Pro version
  • The sound effect library is great

Minus Points of Using Splice

  • The text function will pop randomly across the timeline. It does not automatically show next to the last available text so you need to adjust the timing all the time.
  • You can’t see the font size so your text sizes won’t be uniform
  • There is only one font style
  • You cannot hold and record your audio, meaning that once the audio starts recording, you need to keep on talking.

Conclusion

Overall, we give Splice 4 stars out of 5.

Splice is a great app to edit your videos. It is easy to use and comes with a lot of editing tools. However, it is not so good when it comes to adding text.
